Navigation menu
The header menu in Citera is a standard Shopify menu you build in your admin, then attach to the theme.
Build the menu
Go to Shopify admin → Online Store → Navigation
Not the theme editor — this is in the main Shopify admin.
Open the “Main menu” (or create a new one)
Shopify comes with a default menu named “Main menu”. Use it, or create a new menu and attach it later.
Add menu items
Click Add menu item. Enter a Name (what shoppers see) and a Link (pick a collection, product, page, or paste a URL).
Add dropdown items
To create a dropdown under a top-level item, add child items and drag them under the parent. Citera renders them as a dropdown on desktop and as a nested list on mobile.
Save
Attach the menu to the header
Open the theme editor
Click the header
The right panel shows Header settings.
Find Menu
Pick your menu from the dropdown.
Save
Dropdown depth
Citera supports two levels of nesting:
- Level 1 — top-level nav items (visible on all screens)
- Level 2 — dropdown items under a top-level item
Deeper nesting (level 3) is not rendered — keep your menu tree flat.
Mega menus vs dropdowns
Standard menus render as simple text dropdowns. If you have long collection lists or want featured images inside the dropdown, use Citera’s mega menu block:
Click the header in the editor
Add block → Mega menu
Under the header’s blocks, click Add block and pick Mega menu.
Link it to a menu item
The block references a specific top-level menu item by name. When shoppers hover that item, the mega menu appears instead of a simple dropdown.
Add content blocks
Inside the mega menu, add:
- Column lists (collections, links)
- Featured product cards
- Promotional images
Mobile. Mega menus collapse into standard nested lists on phones. All the same items appear — no content is hidden — but the visual grid becomes vertical.
The hamburger menu (mobile)
On phones, the header hides the full menu behind a hamburger icon. Tap it and a slide-in panel appears with all the nav items. You don’t configure this separately — it’s the same menu you attached to the header.
